❈ Back-Tagging
Yes! I'm happy to keep threading as long as there's interest :)
❈ Thread-Hopping
No.
❈ Fourth-Walling
No.
❈ Offensive Topics
None for me, though I will say that Mai's history has some pretty grim aspects-- child abuse (including heavily-implied CSA at the hands of a family member), clan misogyny, and the overall violence and unhappiness that comes with Jujutsu Kaisen. While these things absolutely impact the kind of person Mai is, I won't bring them up in threads (unless otherwise agreed upon and it makes sense for the direction of the thread).
❈ Seeking
I'm open to all sorts of gen threads, and would especially love to write out something with the other Kyoto students or Utahime. Silly antics, angsty canon happenings, whatever sounds fun! I'm also 100% down for anything involving Maki. Fix-its/AUs, adventures in limbo, snarky text threads-- let them be sisters again, or just let them continue their depressing family drama, I'm easy :) Honestly, I'm even up for the skeevy, antagonistic stuff that comes with interacting with Naoya, as well. Memes or PSLs are fine, just drop me a line here or over PMs!
IC
❈ Physical Affection
She'll be prickly about it unless you're really close, and even then she'll totally be snarky about it. Anything genuinely reciprocated would need strong CR.
❈ Flirting
Sure! Her interactions with other girls have been noted by the creator to seem pretty flirty. If you're a guy, you'll fare a lot less successfully.
❈ Shipping
This would take some Real Effort, she's not the easiest person to be with. That being said, I love to ship so I'm not opposed to it :) F/F 16+ preference, because I don't think she'd respect a guy enough to do anything but lead him on and then laugh in his face later. Fave canon ships are with Momo or Nobara!
❈ Fighting
She's a trouble-maker, so it's likely to happen. This girl is prone to negative CR, oops.
❈ Injuring
Sure, if the thread calls for it.
❈ Killing
Would rather avoid this, but we can always chat about it if it comes up.
❈ Mind-reading
Let me know beforehand, but I'm open to it!
❈ Magic
Considering her canon, go for it.
❈ Triggers
Don't talk about her twin sister in front of her lol
❈ Anything Else?
According to Akutami, Mai's hobby is just "cactus," and I think that's pretty precious.
HMD + Opt-Out
Pretty self-explanatory! Feel free to use this post to opt out of interactions with her, or leave any comments/critique here.
you'll end up calling her babe / she's scorching hot enough to hit save (for ~testygirl)
There's something about the old district that brings Mai an odd sense of comfort. Perhaps it's the twisting alleyways and the old stone streets that rise and descend as one makes their way around Gion, or the vibrant willows that loom over the canals and flank the traditionally-styled buildings. In all of these ways, it really just reminds her of her sprawling family estate, where not a lick of modernity makes it past the front gates. For all of the complex feelings she has for that place, Mai still doesn't stray far from home, electing to stay in Kyoto while her sister traipses around Tokyo like some kind of hot-shot in the big city.
At the end of the day, the two of them lead completely separate lives. Maki has no idea-- probably doesn't even care-- that Mai even goes out on dates. First dates, mostly. She can usually only stomach one before something inevitably sours-- the other person ends up being too boring, too annoying, or too intimidated by her to really hold their own. That's fine. They probably have some kind of feedback about her, too, but by the time it really matters, Mai tells herself that she's lost interest. And that's fine, too. Dates are a little distraction from the things in her life that she hates, but relationships are a whole other deal. Definitely more effort than she feels like putting into anything, really. Or maybe that's just another thing she tells herself.
This is a first, though, being presented with the choice of either a fight or date. This Aira girl-- who was very insistent that Mai get her name when she had needled one of her classmates for her phone number-- is a real breath of fresh air, isn't she? It's not everyday that Mai has to contend with an ego like that, and maybe any other day she might've just gone with the former option just to put her in her place for it.
If Aira's little threat was anything to go by, though, a fight might still be on the table-- but Mai actually put enough thought into her outfit for this ice cream date that messing it up in some dumb tussle would probably piss her off even more. It's rather cute, this little number she picked out. Mai accessories it rather simply-- an unadorned white headband, strappy white sandals, and her trusty white parasol to stave off the afternoon rays from her skin. Obviously, she admired herself quite a bit before heading out. She wouldn't normally wear something so bright, especially not for a first date, but Aira talked a big game and Mai was loathe to be shown up by a girl like her. Besides, it gives her a far more eye-catching appearance than her dark, drab uniform-- even if she does make it look pretty good.
It's still early in the afternoon by the time Mai finds herself outside of the ice cream parlor, nestled amongst the old-fashioned buildings on this particular street. She's the first to arrive, but that's how she likes it. It gives her the chance to practice the cool expression she wears on her face, a blend of feigned disinterest and mild haughtiness. As anticipated, there's a sizable line of people waiting for their turn to order. Some of them are tourists, mostly out-of-towners with a smattering of foreigners sprinkled in. Not that it really matters much to Mai, who keeps her eyes peeled for an easy mark. There are a few contenders, guys who don't really need ice cream more than she does, in her opinion. Pushovers, when it comes down to it, which is fine by her. She'll wait, though, for her partner in crime to arrive before striking-- if Aira is still up for it.
Until then, she'll take the time to type out a quick couple of texts:
waiting outside
hurry up
some guys are trying to hit on me
She's lying, of course! Anyone who has dared to look her way with more than a passing interest has been met with an icy stare, so far-- once again, her resting bitch face comes in handy. No one needs to know that she's feeling that rare tickle of impatience for her date to arrive. Mai really only sends this message to Aira out of a not-so-subtle attempt to get her to rush over, maybe see her a touch flustered, though she won't count on it too heavily. It's still within the hour before they're supposed to meet, but in Aira's own words, they are burning daylight...
It's all right. Maybe she can try figuring out why patience is such a virtue. Or not!

and i think i'm ready / to let you get under my skin (for ~rockinghorse)
[Thank goodness for the Shinkansen.
Otherwise, Mai highly doubts she would have slummed it on a local train for almost half a day just to spend some time in Tokyo. As it is, she hardly bothers venturing to the capital city if it doesn't involve anything school-related-- and even then, she's the last person to be excited about participating in the first place. She far prefers her home campus in Kyoto to the sister-school where, unfunnily enough, her own sister attends. Just the thought of being in the same city as Maki annoys her to no end, but Mai takes mild comfort knowing that whatever plans she has wouldn't have interested her musclehead sister, anyway.
She won't admit it out loud, but the best part of today's trip is the fact that it doesn't involve school, or curses, or anything relating the life she was unfortunately born into and forced to remain in. Pretending to be utterly normal, even if for a day, is a luxury not meant for someone like her-- yet here she is curled up in her train seat and watching the world rush by, just like everyone else.
Of all of the impulsive decisions that she's made, this one might prove to be one of the very few that don't crumble into something wholly disappointing. Or, well, a girl can certainly wish.
At some point in their planning, Mai had insisted on meeting up at some karaoke joint-- Nana made no mention of any upcoming shows she'd be performing at, but Mai would be damned if she went back home without finding out if the woman was all-talk about her record deal and star talent. In another life, Mai might've been the type to join a group of girlfriends for singing as soon as the last school bell sounded. In this life, though, she's rubbing elbows with someone almost-famous, hundreds of miles away from home. She could do a whole lot worse for herself (and certainly has before).
She's reluctant to admit when she's lost, but it's obvious enough when she shows up a bit late to their hangout that Mai fumbled the directions along the way. Embarrassing. The excuse of not being all that familiar with the city is tidy enough and it's the truth, but Mai is still annoyed-- half with herself, and half with the city of Tokyo in general. When she spots Nana lingering outside of the building, she makes a half-decent effort to smooth the scowl from her face before approaching her side.]
These streets are so annoying. I don't know how anyone could get used to living here.
[As she speaks this brusque "greeting" of hers, Mai fishes around in her tote bag before pulling out a small box of a regional confection from her hometown. Without fanfare, she holds the gift out to Nana in the hopes that she'll do Mai the favor of taking it off of her hands.]
This was my friend's idea. Keep it, or give it away. I won't care either way, really.
[A lie; Momo might have been the one to insist on her bringing along a souvenir from Kyoto, but Mai is the one holding the box and the expectation of approval. A hereditary trait she loathes, honestly.]
So, what are the odds of this place having any of your originals to sing along to?
